Lesser Known ADHD Medications

Choosing which medication is right for a child who suffers from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder was at one time much easier to do. The big choice was whether to use a brand name or generic medication. Today, there are many more choices available to treat ADHD. There is not one best medicine for everyone. There are more popular medications and then there are lesser known ADHD medications.

The following are four of the lesser known medications used in the treatment of ADHD:

Vyvanse

This is the lastest medication to be approved to treat ADHD. It is a long acting stimulant with a main ingredient of lisdexamfetamine dimesylate. It is available in 30mg, 50mg and 70 mg capsules. This medication is to be taken with a full glass of water. It works best taken in the morning because it may cause sleep problems if taken at night. Minor side effects include skin rash, blurred vision, dry mouth, irritability, loss of appetite, weight loss and stomach pain.

Daytrana

This is methyphenidate or a Ritalin patch and available in 10mg, 15mg, 20mg and 30mg. It is worn for 9 hours at one time on the hip and applied to his area every day. It works best for those kids who do not like to take medication. The most common side effects include vomiting, nausea, sleep problems, loss of appetite, mood swings, tics and decreased weight.

Intuniv

This is an extended- release tablet taken once a day. It has not been approved by the FDA but the manufacture has an ‘approvable letter’ from the FDA. This medication is for those who cannot tolerate other stimulants for ADHD. Doses include 1mg, 2mg, 3mg and 4mg. The side effects include fatigue, drowsiness, headache and abdominal pain.

Tenex

This medication is used for high blood pressure but is found to be also helpful with ADHD symptoms. The side effects include closing of the throat, difficult breathing, hives, swelling, depression, slowing of heart rate, high or low blood pressure, headache, dry mouth, constipation, dizziness, fatigue and insomnia. This is made in a tablet form in 1mg, 2mg, and 3mg.
