Symptoms of ADHD during the teenage years are compounded by the fact that this is the time of puberty and peer pressure and these issues may exacerbate their social isolation.

This becomes an extension of the symptoms related above as school continues to play an important part into your child’s adjustment. The teenage years also add to the mix peer pressure to try drugs, alcohol and sex, however there is also a marked decrease in the amount of hyperactivity.

The poor grades and failed tests can create situations where the ADD ADHD child will consider skipping classes or even school altogether.

Poor Self Image. Constantly confused and being told that they failed can have a significant effect on the child causing depression and further withdrawal from social circles. This can also lead to increased incidents of outbursts and defiance, including destructive behavior such as breaking things or lashing out at family members or friends.

Drug and Alcohol Abuse can be a symptom that the child is trying to self medicate themselves, whether to fit in more or to as an attention getting device. Ritalin, one of the ADD ADHD medications commonly prescribed is often misused by teenagers and is also quite a popular street drug.

Many teenagers with ADHD symptoms will have problems with their first job or jobs. The teenagers with ADD ADHD are unprepared for the complex tasks associated with all but the least demanding jobs. Even here their lack of attention to detail, poor attendance or erratic behavior is often at conflict with the work environment.
